Amazon Rainforest Could Virtually Disappear Due to Global Warming

The Amazon rainforest could shrink up to 85% over the next century, according to study presented by British scientists at a global warming conference in Copenhagen earlier this month. David Adam reports for the Guardian:

Chris Jones, who led the research, told the conference: “A temperature rise of anything over 1C commits you to some future loss of Amazon forest. Even the commonly quoted 2C target already commits us to 20-40% loss. On any kind of pragmatic timescale, I think we should see loss of the Amazon forest as irreversible.”

  • deep solar minimum
For 2008 there were no sunspots observed on 266 of the year’s 366 days (73%).
Sunspot counts for 2009 have dropped even lower. As of March 31st, there were no sunspots on 78 of the year’s 90 days (87%)
It adds up to one inescapable conclusion: “We’re experiencing a very deep solar minimum,” says solar physicist Dean Pesnell of the Goddard Space Flight Center.
“This is the quietest sun we’ve seen in almost a century,” agrees sunspot expert David Hathaway of the Marshall Space Flight Center.
